* Study candomble´ with great Brazilian percussionists, singers and dancers.
* Study Pandeiro, the Brazilian tambourine.
* Study with Layne adapting Brazilian rhythms to Middle Eastern tambourine.

Gilmar Sampaio, an amazing priest of Omolu, teaches us traditional chants to the Orixas´ and their dances:

Joel Souza, and Alcides Morais from
BALÉ FOLCLÓRICO DA BAHIA http://www.balefolcloricodabahia.com.br/eng/
teach the traditional candomble´ rhythms on atabaques and agogo bell.

Paulo Silva, Ubaldo Oliveira, Moises Lama, Everton Isidoro, and Eduardo Mota are from the younger generation of percussionists coming up now and studying at UFBA. They are all performing with well known bands in Salvador. They teach samba reggae, samba de roda, pandeiro, berimbau, just about whatever you can think of! When we're lucky and he can fit us into his busy schedule we have had Gilberto Santiago, who is one of only three percussionists in Bahia's Symphonic Orchestra, teach us pandeiro.

Rosangela Silvestre teaches us the traditional dance and gestures of candomble´. Rosangela was one of the foundational choreographers for BALÉ FOLCLÓRICO and spends much of her time teaching in the US and Europe. She has studied traditional dance in India and has an amazing perception of the traditional movements from candomble´from the yogic viewpoint of the chakras. Here's a clip from one of her professional dance classes. (We'll be doing beginner's classes!!!)

You need to be in very good physical health to go on this trip. You need to be able to walk a substantial amount every day, up and down cobble stone hills, you need to be able to take rigorous drum classes in rooms with no air conditioning -- everyone is very hot and sweats profusely!!! It is cleansing! You will stay in an air conditioned hotel room but that is about all of the air condition you will experience on the trip! You need to have a reserve of patience, more than the normal American! Brazilians are patient and the culture is patient. Time is elastic there. I do work with teachers who show up on time but from time to time there are glitches in the matrix of the Brazilian world! The schedule may change quite suddenly due to finding out something marvelous is happening that we must go see!
